Oriole c. 2015

ORIOLE

Oriole is a seamless, top-down cardigan that can be worn open or closed with a shawl pin. Business or casual, Oriole can be worn for many different occasions.
The yoke is worked from the top using a combination of a contiguous-sleeve and a round yoke methods. The body includes subtle waist shaping. After the body of the cardigan is finished, the lace border is picked up along the entire neck edge and worked with a larger needle. To avoid the lace from curling on itself, a knit lining is knitted and turned toward the inside to provide structure. The sleeves are also knit from the top. The shoulder cap of each sleeve is shaped via short rows (no wrapping necessary!), then the sleeves are knit in the round down to the cuffs.

EASE

There is approximately 2 inches (5 cm) of positive ease worked into the bust circumference. To determine the correct size, first measure your bust circumference and compare this with the Sizes and Bust Measurement as stated in the pattern. Then determine how tight or loose you would like "Oriole" to fit.

GAUGE

20 stitches x 28 rows = 4” (10 cm) in stockinette stitch on size US 6 (4.0 mm) needles (or size needed to get gauge), measured on a washed and blocked swatch. You are advised to achieve both row and stitch gauges for this pattern.

DIFFICULTY

Intermediate: This pattern is knit using a combination of the contiguous and round yoke methods, increases are required on the reverse side of the fabric. The sleeves are knit from the top-down for a set-in look, this requires "decrease" short rows to form the sleeve cap.

NEEDLES

US Size 6 (4.0 mm) circular needle (or size needed to achieve gauge) for body, sleeves and lace lining; US Size 8 (5.0 mm) circular needle for neck lace border; US Size 2 (2.75 mm) circular needle for picking up sleeve stitches and working sleeve cap.
